Second performance of the Tavistock Sings! commission, Grendel's End, (see May 3rd) by the Kelly Choral Society and the Kelly College Senior Choir, piano: Mary Mazur-Park, organ: Dr Sean Sweeney. Soloists: Ian Hardy (Hrothgar), James Rickard (Grendel), Edwina Smith (the Queen). The performance was conducted by the composer in the Chapel, Kelly College, Tavistock, Devon.
First triumphant performance of Tavistock Sings! Festival commission "Grendel's End", Tavistock Parish Church, 7.00pm.. This cantata for adult chorus, Devon school choirs (300 singers in all), piano and organ, is based on the Grendel episode, from the first masterpiece of English literature: Beowulf . The text has been specially compiled and modernised by Professor Liam Snow.
The first performance received a standing ovation for the chorus and soloists: Jonathan Lewsey (Grendel), Mark Perry (Aelfric), Ian Hardy (King Hrothgar), Kate Walker (Queen), Mary Mazur-Park (piano) and Dr Sean Sweeney (organ). The participating choirs were: the Future Generation, Kelly Choral Society, Kelly Junior Choir, Kelly Senior Choir, Kelly College Preparatory School Choir, Manadon Vale Primary School, Milton Abbot Primary School and Tavistock Primary School Choir.
